Emotional Intelligence Coaching the Coach

It is very clear we are at the beginning of a massive paradigm shift-the speed of change is unprecedented. Our ability to exercise choice has never been more critical. Our emotional state-is the bedrock of all our decision making. Anxiety will trigger responses governed by the myopic ego and its poverty stricken mentality of slash and burn its limited range of options.

Or we can master our emotions and move to higher ground. Our view is unequivocal, that Emotional Intelligence is a Meta transformative skill that should drive our business competencies to consistently find breakthrough solutions. Our passion is forming empowering partnerships with people who want to contribute and make a significant difference. If you would like an exploratory discussion please contact us

In these challenging times, with our global economy looking very shaky we need to be very careful we are not sucked into some kind of group despair and become dysfunctional. However, quick fix outdated solutions that fail to get to the core of problem will not succeed. For healthy sustainable change to occur, we need to accept the basic premise that for a fundamental shift to occur it will require a profound conscious decision to change the culture of the organisation. It will need to be led by emotionally intelligent leaders.

Deep down we understand that sticking plaster remedies will not work this time round, no phoney power pep talks! Solutions have to be holistic, realistic and one hundred per cent authentic. For that to happen we must engage the best creative talent within the organisation. Then, and only then can we expect breakthrough solutions to become a habit, as the new cultural shift takes hold and finally stabilises. An unwavering optimistic yes-we-can- attitude becomes the norm.

How do we move from good to great? Research has shown conclusively that those entrepreneurs and executives, who have higher than average emotional intelligence scores, consistently outperform their colleagues by a considerable margin. The USA Air Force also found that by using emotional intelligence to select recruiters, they increased their ability to predict successful recruiters by nearly three fold. The immediate gain was a saving of $3 million annually.

Executive coaching has shown to have a powerful effect on the bottom line. One professional study showed that coaching produced a 529% return on investment and significant intangible benefits to the business. Coaching has proved to be a very effective developmental tool for leadership particularly in the development of the Meta performance skill of Emotional Intelligence

How come breakthrough solutions are not the norm?

Most leadership selections are based solely on technical competence. In the case of accountancy, as one example , we can witness with our present banking crises, it’s not enough. It’s far too narrow; the normal assumptions about leadership are seriously flawed.

Having a degree these days is simply the threshold entry qualification to top management and executive positions. However, there is now ample evidence highlighting the critical need for more than just technical competence alone.  In one study of 12,000 managers and executives, it was found that 80% of star performers’ competencies were related to emotional intelligence.

Because of the work by people like Daniel Goleman, we now understand that Emotional Intelligence (EQ) is often far more important than IQ. And until we put EQ on the radar screen we will prolong our floundering.  However, simply by being aware of the basic factors governing EQ significantly improves performance.

Will Emotional Intelligence Define the 21st Century Entrepreneur and Executives?

Our view is unequivocal; we believe that Emotional Intelligence is the missing piece of the puzzle for self-management and the equally critical area of relationship management.

Emotional Intelligence has been irrefutably indentified as a crucial predictor for workplace success. Entrepreneurs are those that shine and excel in the work environment beyond the norm. Outstanding performance has an undeniable strong correlation to Emotional Intelligence ability.

Authentic leaders have an ability to win the hearts and minds of their people by being engaging and inspirational, using their Emotional Intelligent skills whilst navigating their business through the ups and downs of the global economic climate.

Without question the best investment that entrepreneurs and executives can make is providing in depth training and coaching on emotional intelligence. The hard nosed facts are that executive coaching shows a very strong ROI.

The Business Case for Emotional Intelligence

Leading research by Harvard Business Review has shown that leaders who have mastered the basics of Emotional Intelligence have a different Leadership Mindset. Emotional intelligence leadership consistently outperform those who rely solely on technical and cognitive expertise.

To support this statement let us quote a few case studies where emotional intelligence interventions were used:

LOreal sales agents selected on emotional intelligence assessments, outsold salespeople selected under the old selection procedure by $91,370 per annum with a net revenue increase of $2,558,360 net. (Spencer & Spencer 1993)

Research indicates that only 7% of leadership success depends on intellect; 93% of success comes from trust, integrity, authenticity, honesty, creativity, presence and resilience. (Cooper & Sawaf. 1996)

Partners assessed from a multinational consulting firm on emotional intelligence competencies scoring above average on 9+ of the 20 competencies delivered $1.2million more profit than their counterparts, earning 139% more than the lower EQ partners.

The US Air Force used emotional intelligence to select recruiters (the Air Force’s front-line HR personnel) and found that the most successful recruiters scored significantly higher in the emotional intelligence competencies of Assertiveness, Empathy, Happiness, and Emotional Self Awareness.

The Air Force also found that by using emotional intelligence to select recruiters , they increased their ability to predict successful recruiters by nearly three fold. The immediate gain was a saving of $3 million annually. These gains resulted in the Government Accounting Office submitting a report to congress, which led to a request that the secretary of Defence order all branches of the armed forces to adopt this procedure in recruitment and selection.

One of the foundations of emotional competencies - accurate self assessment was associated with superior performance among several hundred mangers from 12 different organisations (Boyatzis, 1982)

Research by the Center for Creative Leadership has found that the primary causes of derailment in executives involves deficits in emotional competence. The three primary ones are difficulty in handling change, not being able to work well in a team, and poor interpersonal relations.

Another emotional competence, the ability to handle stress, was linked to success as a store manger in a retail chain. The most successful store mangers were those able to handle stress. Success was based on net profits, sales per square foot, sales per employee, and per dollar inventory investment (Lusch & Serpkeuci, 1990)

For 515 senior executives analyzed by the search firm Egon Zehnder International, those who were primarily strong in emotional intelligence were more like to succeed than those who were strongest in either relevant previous experience or IQ.

In jobs of medium complexity (sales clerks, mechanics), a top performer is 12 times more productive than those at the bottom and 85 percent more productive than an average performer. In the most complex jobs (insurance salespeople, account mangers) a top performer is 127 percent more productive that an average performer (Hunter,Schmidt, & Judiesch, 1990).

An analysis of more that 300 top level executives from fifteen global companies showed that six emotional competencies distinguished stars for average: Influence, Team Leadership, Organisational Awareness, self confidence, Achievement Drive, and Leadership (Spencer, L. Jr. 1997)

The above clearly validates the claim that emotional intelligence leadership training and coaching shows a strong ROI, with emotional intelligence factors accounting for 93% success. Emotional leadership orchestrates the mood of the organisation. This is done by implementing a roll out emotional intelligence training programme for all levels, which produces extraordinary results from ordinary people.

Emotional intelligence leadership training can cause a ripple effect which motivates the entire organisation, suddenly, everyone is fully engaged. Walking the Talk becomes the norm. Emotional intelligence is a Meta leadership skill that changes attitude a key dynamic in producing peak performance at all levels.
